Drain Box Installation in DeLand, FL

If water is constantly pooling in one corner of your yard, long after it stops raining, a drain box may be the perfect solution. Sometimes called a catch basin, this simple device collects water from low spots and sends it underground to a safe discharge location. It’s discreet, effective, and solves a problem nearly every Florida homeowner encounters at some point.

At Tree of Life Landscaping, we’ve installed hundreds of drain boxes as part of larger drainage systems or as stand-alone solutions. We’re a certified NDS Drainage Contractor, and we design each system based on real field knowledge of DeLand’s flat terrain, sandy soils, and heavy rainfall.

What is a drain box, and how does it work?

A drain box is placed at the lowest point of your yard — wherever the water naturally collects. When it rains, the water funnels into the box, then flows out through an underground pipe. Depending on your yard’s layout, that pipe can connect to:

    • A pop-up emitter that releases water further out in the lawn
    • A French drain that helps disperse the water slowly
    • A storm drain (in some cases) or downhill daylighting point

The box sits just below the surface and is typically covered with a clean, low-profile grate that blends into your lawn, mulch, or garden bed.

Signs you may need a drain box

Not every drainage problem requires a full regrade or extensive underground system. In many cases, a single low spot in the yard is the culprit, and a drain box is the most effective, least invasive way to fix it. Here are some of the most common signs we look for:

    • You have a single area that holds water for hours or days
    • There’s a soggy patch that stays wet even after light rain
    • You’ve noticed erosion or mulch washing away in one specific spot
    • Water from a downspout is collecting at the edge of a patio or walkway
    • You’ve tried surface grading or splash blocks, but the problem keeps returning

Drain boxes are ideal when regrading isn’t an option, or when you need a targeted fix that works with the yard you already have.

Our drain box installation process

Drain Box Installation

Every property is different, but our process is straightforward, efficient, and always tailored to your exact drainage issue.

Site evaluation:  We identify the low point where water is collecting and assess how your yard drains. If needed, we’ll also review your roof runoff and existing downspouts.

System design:  Using NDS best practices, we determine the correct size and type of box, the piping layout, and the safest discharge location. We’ll also explain how this can tie into your existing drainage system if needed.

Installation:  We dig only where needed, set the drain box at grade level, and connect it to underground piping. Boxes are surrounded by clean drainage rock to promote flow and protect against shifting.

Restoration:  We restore sod, mulch, or hardscaping so everything looks clean and finished when we’re done.

Most installations are completed in a day or two, with minimal disruption to your yard.

Drain Box Installation FAQ

If your yard has a single low area where water collects, yes, it’s often the ideal solution. We’ll confirm with an on-site evaluation.

Most residential properties need a 9" or 12" box, but we’ll size it appropriately based on runoff volume and flow rate.

No. Most boxes are flush with the lawn or mulch bed and use a simple grate cover that blends in. They’re designed to function without drawing attention.

Yes. We regularly tie drain boxes into French drains, downspout extensions, or both as part of a larger water control system.

This contractor is highly recommended. They installed a retaining wall, paver patio, paver walkway and French drain, with decorative rock on top and along the border. They were professional, respectful of our property and had genuine concern over the quality of their work.

I recently had gutters and downspouts installed on my house and noticed a lot of standing water coming from one of the downspouts. I contacted Michael about possible drainage solutions and he suggested a french drain. He was able to come look at the site the same day, and after the utility lines were marked he installed the drain in one day. He was very professional and helpful, even taking time to make a trip to the hardware store to improve the design of the drain. I was very satisfied with the price, the speed, and the function of the project. I would highly recommend Tree of Life to anybody who needs landscaping. (He also contacted me a month later after some hard rain to check how it working. Great service!)

Mike was very easy to work with and I am extremely happy with the work he did for me. He did hard and soft landscaping, irrigation repair, installed two French drains, and cleaned and sealed my paver driveway. Extremely extremely happy with the results. He picks materials of good quality for installation, and takes pride in his work, coming and checking on if there is anything that needs adjusting after completion of the project. I definitely recommend.
