Expert French Drain Installation in DeLand, FL

Our goal is to solve your drainage problem once and for all!  If you're dealing with standing water in your yard, soggy patches that never dry, or erosion near your foundation, you're not alone. Many homeowners in DeLand and surrounding areas run into the same issues, especially after one of Florida’s heavy afternoon rainstorms.

At Tree of Life Landscaping, we specialize in professional French drain installation. We are a certified NDS Drainage Contractor and our systems are designed to move water underground and away from problem areas, so your yard stays dry, your foundation stays protected, and you don’t have to worry every time it rains.

When is a French drain the right solution?

French drains are one of the most effective ways to handle drainage problems in Central Florida, especially on residential lots where surface drainage isn’t an option. They work best in situations like:

    • Water pooling near the foundation or garage
    • Downspouts dumping water too close to the house
    • Erosion in the backyard or garden beds
    • Low spots in the yard that stay wet
    • Water entering patios, pool decks, or walkways
    • Runoff from neighboring properties

Here in DeLand, we get more than 50 inches of rain per year, and most of that comes in short, intense bursts. Combine that with flat terrain and sandy soil, and it’s easy to see why water tends to collect where it shouldn't. A properly installed French drain gives that water somewhere to go — underground and out of sight.

What’s included in a Tree of Life French drain system?

Every system we install is custom-built for your yard. We start by identifying the water source, often a downspout or low point, and then trench and install a drainage pipe that moves the water underground.

Most systems include:

    • A trench filled with drainage rock
    • Corrugated or solid PVC pipe depending on slope and conditions
    • Filtered downspout connections to prevent clogging
    • A pop-up emitter or exit point where the water can safely release

If your goal is to make water disappear, not just move it to another problem spot, this is the way to do it. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all. We design systems based on your slope, soil, and how your property responds to rain.

This is about more than digging a trench. It’s about knowing how water behaves on your property, and designing a system that works year-round.

French Drain FAQ

In most cases, yes. By routing water underground, a French drain stops surface runoff from washing away soil and mulch. For more severe erosion caused by slope, we may recommend a retaining wall in combination with drainage.

Corrugated pipe systems usually last 5 to 10 years, depending on use and soil. Solid PVC systems can last 15 to 20 years or longer, and are more resistant to clogs, crushing, and root intrusion.

If water is pooling for more than three hours after a storm, causing erosion, or collecting near your foundation, then yes, it’s time to take action. If the issue is minor and purely cosmetic, we’ll give you honest guidance on whether a drain is really necessary.

Our systems include filtered fittings at the downspouts to block debris, and we often recommend leaf guard installation for homes with overhanging trees. With proper setup, clogs are rare, especially with PVC.

What to expect from our French drain installation process

Installing a French drain is about more than just digging a trench. At Tree of Life Landscaping, we follow NDS-certified best practices to ensure your system performs long-term — even through Florida’s heaviest storms.

1. On-site drainage consultation

We walk your property to identify the problem, measure grades, and assess soil conditions. This helps us understand exactly where the water is coming from and how to control it.

2. Custom system design

Using NDS guidelines, we design your system for proper flow and durability — including slope (typically 1% or more), pipe type, outlet location, and debris protection. We match materials and layout to your soil, yard layout, and runoff patterns.

3. Clean and professional installation

Our crew follows proper installation methods: trenching at the right depth and slope, lining with fabric when needed, using clean drainage rock, and protecting existing landscaping. We restore disturbed areas with care.

4. Long-lasting results

We build systems that solve water issues at the source — helping prevent erosion, flooding, and foundation problems. Whether you choose corrugated or PVC, we’ll make sure it’s installed right and built to last.

Let’s solve your drainage problem for good

If your lawn is always soggy, your patio floods every time it rains, or water is creeping toward your home, it’s time to fix it, not just patch it. A French drain is often the simplest, most effective long-term solution.

This contractor is highly recommended. They installed a retaining wall, paver patio, paver walkway and French drain, with decorative rock on top and along the border. They were professional, respectful of our property and had genuine concern over the quality of their work.

I recently had gutters and downspouts installed on my house and noticed a lot of standing water coming from one of the downspouts. I contacted Michael about possible drainage solutions and he suggested a french drain. He was able to come look at the site the same day, and after the utility lines were marked he installed the drain in one day. He was very professional and helpful, even taking time to make a trip to the hardware store to improve the design of the drain. I was very satisfied with the price, the speed, and the function of the project. I would highly recommend Tree of Life to anybody who needs landscaping. (He also contacted me a month later after some hard rain to check how it working. Great service!)

Mike was very easy to work with and I am extremely happy with the work he did for me. He did hard and soft landscaping, irrigation repair, installed two French drains, and cleaned and sealed my paver driveway. Extremely extremely happy with the results. He picks materials of good quality for installation, and takes pride in his work, coming and checking on if there is anything that needs adjusting after completion of the project. I definitely recommend.
